Production Planning and Control: Basics and Concepts

The class begins with an analysis of the business environment that influences manufacturing processes like order qualifiers and order winners. Students are then taught how to create a process map to help enable them to identify problems with a particular production line.

The class then takes an extensive look atforecasting to provide students with an understanding of industry recommended procedures for reliable forecasting. Next, we examine best practices in sales and operations planning and preparation of the master schedule.

Students are introduced to inventory management to foster cooperation with purchasing and the warehouse.

We now discuss best practices inmaterials resource planning (MRP), capacity management, andproduction activity control to learn how to make the most of what we have to work with.

The class finishes up with training in lean manufacturing, just in time (JIT), andthe theory of constraints. Student will use the process map they created the first day of class to identify how the process they have mapped can be improved through the application of the theory of constraints.
